This sanctuary is home to more wildlife than any other nature reserve in Africa, including the Big Five, and contains over 147 species of animals and 507 species of birds.
The below gives more info on your location.
Set among lush gardens with an abundance of birdlife, our rooms add to the sense of being away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Protea Hotel Hazyview has a wide variety of dining options to ensure that we cater to all appetites, including a fun specialised menu for our younger visitors.
The hotel is conveniently located a mere 20 minutes from the Kruger National Park!
Situated only 100 meters from the Paul Kruger Gate of the Kruger National Park, the luxurious hotel provides the ideal location from which to experience wildlife first-hand. 1% of accommodation booking donated to endangered Wildlife Trust Rhino Project!
With its ideal location, Protea Hotel The Winkler is the perfect spot from which to explore the beautiful surrounding area that offers attractions like Blyde River Canyon, Sabie Waterfalls and Pilgrim’s Rest. The hotel is only 20 minutes’ drive from the renowned Kruger National Park.
Out of the 517 species of birds found at the Kruger National Park, 253 are residents, 117 non-breeding migrants and 147 nomads. Some of the larger birds need large territories and are restricted to the Kruger and other conservation areas.
Six of these belong to what is known as the Big Six Birds. They are the Lappet-faced Vulture, Martial Eagle, Saddle-billed Stork, Kori Bustard, Ground Hornbill and the reclusive Pel's Fishing Owl.
Get a more detailed sense of the bush and closer to nature with wilderness walking trails in the Kruger.
The bush walks are done in small groups with highly knowledgeable, armed guides and are not particularly strenuous.
The big five includes the African Elephant, Rhinoceros, Cape Buffalo, Leopard and the extremely popular Lion and are all found in the Kruger National Park.
It is important to note that, like any other animal, these animals do not arrange their living conditions conveniently around being sighted and spotting them while out on a game drive is sometimes an extremely lucky set of circumstances.
