Witbank

Witbank

Witbank, meaning "white ridge" in Afrikaans, is named after an outcrop of white sandstone where wagon transport drivers of old rested between journeys. The city is an ideal stopover between destinations, as it's just an hour from OR Tambo International Airport and the same distance from Pretoria. A little known fact about the town is that Winston Churchill, then a young soldier-journalist, hid in a colliery near Witbank after his escape from Pretoria during the Second Boer War.

Although Witbank is a popular stopover to the world-famous Kruger National Park, it has a variety of its own wildlife, and is a popular holiday destination in its own right. Witbank Dam is a popular recreation and boating spot and is home to the Witbank Yacht Club. Bushveld hikes are popular, as well as fishing in the charming Olifants River. You can even go skydiving at the local Witbank Skydiving Club.
