Protea Hotels Classic Car Auction For Charity
Hosted by the Southern Cape Old Car Club, the annual Midas George Old Car Show is arguably the best classic car show in South Africa, attracting more than 900 classic, hot rod and modified cars, and thousands of visitors from across the country.
Part of the charm of the show is its location at the PW Botha College on York Street (the main entrance route into George) with the Outeniqua Mountains serving as a backdrop for row upon row of these inspiring machines.
The theme for this year’s show, which takes place on February 11 and 12, is convertibles and a highlight of the show will be the Protea Hotels Classic Car auction, in partnership with Aucor, of some of the world’s most collectible cars, all in the name of charity. Last year’s event raised more than R80 000 for Reach for a Dream (Protea Hotels’ main charity) and the Southern Cape Old Car Club which distributed the funds to local charities in George.
Going under the hammer at 1pm next Saturday will be such beauties as a 1968 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, 1932 Chevrolet Phaeton, three 1965 Ford Mustangs - arguably the best era of these beautiful ponies, a 1970 Karmen Ghia and a 1958 Triumph TR3A.
The Midas George Old Car Show started in 1997 on Paul Fick’s farm ”Blackwood” near Victoria Bay. A total of 80 cars where on show and food stalls were provided by the Lions Club. The popularity of the show has seen it move to larger venues over the years, where all things motoring are celebrated. Past shows have included beautifully restored tractors which were demonstrated to the public by driving through the arena with running commentary; a large variety of motorcycles on display; and a model car show. All participating clubs have the opportunity to take part in a drive-past to show off their pride and joys at one of the largest car shows in the country.
