The TEAM at the Protea Hotel Mossel Bay are celebrating the award of a fourth star from the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa!
“We’ve been operating under a dual grading up to now: although our self catering Harbour Suites have had four stars since they opened in 2004, the hotel side of our operation has always only had three,” said general manager Karen Bús
“But we’ve always worked to provide four star service – and now we can market ourselves at that level, too.
She said that the Hotel won a TripAdvisor Service Excellence Award in 2012, “And we’re very proud of that, since the TripAdvisor awards are judged by GUESTS who’ve stayed here.
“We’ve also won several AA Accommodation Awards, too.”
She ascribes the property’s success to the people who work for the hotel.
“We’ve got a fantastic TEAM of people who are well trained and who focus on efficient service, hospitality, and friendliness – and we follow the Protea Hospitality Groups’ three guiding principles: Respect for human dignity, Best GUEST service, and The search of excellence.”
But, she said, the TEAM has great infrastructure to work with, and this makes all the difference
“Our reception area and Manor Rooms occupy the Ochre Building, which dates backs to 1846: it’s a beautiful structure with thick sandstone walls – and it’s one of the oldest commercial buildings in the Southern Cape.”
The hotel’s Ochre Conference centre – also part of the Ochre Building – can seat up to 120 people cinema style, or 100 for banquets or wedding receptions. And, on the sea-facing side of the hotel, the Legendary Blue Oyster Bar is a popular venue for scenic sundowners and decadent cocktails.
“Our restaurant – the Café Gannet – must surely rate as one of Mossel Bay’s real attractions,” said Ms. Bús.

The hotel sleeps 96 GUESTS in 23 en-suite rooms and eight self-catering suites.
Ms. Bús said that the Protea Hotel Mossel Bay has three unique selling points: “Location, location, and location!
“We’re in the heart of town, across the road from the tourism information office, and right next door to the Dias Museum Complex where the Old Post Office Tree and the replica of Dias’ ship (which stands in the Maritime Museum) are two of Mossel Bay’s most important attractions.
“And we’re within walking distance of Santos Beach (which has seasonal Blue Flag status) and of the harbour and the Mossel Bay Yacht Club, which is important if you want to take a whale-watching cruise, or a trip to Seal Island - or if sailing’s your thing (because Mossel Bay has been called the world’s best sailing destination by a number of seasoned professionals).
“The hotel is also only 40 km from the airport in George, and we’re situated exactly halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth - which are both just 400 km.
