o Hunting

o Makapan Caves
Situated between Polokwane Mokopane on the N1; famed for its yield of fossils and the siege of General Potgieter and the local tribesman for 30 days. Potgieter himself was killed in the ensuring battle in which 1500 tribesmen perished.
Polokwane is however within two or three hour’s drive from many of Limpopo’s undiscovered jewels.

The Limpopo Province provides visitors with typical bushveld experiences, golden savannah veld, stunning sunsets and off the track destinations not yet commercialised by the tourist industry. Experience Africa at its rawest!

Well worth visiting is the Khetlhankone village near Modjadjiskloof known for the largest cycads in the world, these cycads are named Modjadji cycads after the mystical Rain Queen, Modjadji - the matrilineal monarch of the Balobedu an African tribe of the Northern Sotho group.

Seventy five percent of The Kruger National Park falls within the borders of the Limpopo Province with less well-publicised campsites. Enter through the Phalaborwa or Punda Maria Gates and visit places like Shingwedzi merely two to three hours from Polokwane. Hear the bark-like roar-roar roaring of the lions at night fall:  the sinister giggle of hyenas prowling in the dark. Rise early and you may be lucky to catch sight of a shy leopard warming in the morning sun before slinking away into the bush.  Respect the reverent elephants (remember they’re bigger than you!)

Limpopo is also proud of its World Heritage Site – Mapungubwe.  Situated within the Vhembe Nature Reserve, archaeologists discovered evidence of a sophisticated Iron Age civilization in the early 1930’s. This archaeological site dates back to between 1000 and 1300 AD, here you may also view San rock art dating back some 15000 years.

2010 FIFA & INTERNATIONAL VISITORS INFORMATION

Protea Hotel Landmark is situated just 6.2 km outside Polokwane which has been identified as one of the host cities for the 2010 World Cup event.  Polokwane is however, one of the fastest growing cities in South Africa, so the distance is growing smaller every day.

PETER MOKABA STADIUM
The current Peter Mokaba Stadium is being replaced by a much larger, new stadium which will carry the same name.  Construction workers are on the site day and night, to complete the project on time for the great event.  We hope you will be joining us at the stadium, and cheering on the teams with a vuvuzela.  If you haven’t blown this noisy musical instrument, you have not experienced soccer in African style!

POLOKWANE, LIMPOPO PROVINCE
The meaning of Polokwane, is “the city of peace”, which should reassure many visitors to the only city in our province about security concerns.  Although the Limpopo Province is the second poorest province in South Africa, it has one of the lowest crime rates.  Protea Hotel Landmark is involved with the Polokwane Chamber of Business (PCOB) and the local South African Police (SAP) in a project to motivate and reward police officers in our city for good performance, thereby contributing to the lower crime rate.

HOTEL SECURITY
The hotel is situated in a tranquil rural area right next to the N1 highway which runs from Gauteng through Polokwane to Zimbabwe.  Our hotel is enclosed by electrical fencing and the guardhouse is manned by security guards.  Over and above these precautions, the farming area in which the hotel finds itself is patrolled by a farm watch (a body of local farmers who volunteer their services) known as Elriet Security, probably making it the safest hotel to stay in.

ECONOMY
The Limpopo Province has been known as the bread basket of South Africa, but in recent years the discovery of some of the world’s largest platinum sources in the Polokwane and surrounding areas has brought about a boom in the local economy.  Polokwane is also a favourite shopping venue for many of the neighbouring countries such as Botswana and Zimbabwe, many of these shoppers prefer to stay at Protea Hotel Landmark with their laden vehicles and trailers before returning home.  Polokwane is truly “the gateway to Africa.”

HEALTH SERVICES
Polokwane has several private hospitals and clinics with good facilities manned by well qualified nurses, doctors and specialists.  Remember to take out health insurance before coming out to visit.
You may also want to take quinine tablets before coming to South Africa if you are planning to visit the Kruger National Park as it is in a malaria area.  Protea Hotel Landmark provides insect repellant in every room as a precaution as Polokwane is not officially a malaria area.

CLIMATE
Polokwane has a reputation for a mild African climate, beautiful blue, cloudless and skies.
Dress like an onion, you should be able to peel your clothes as it can be chilly in the mornings, but peak at 39ºC in the afternoon at the height of summer in December!

TRANSPORT
Polokwane is a modern city, but public transport is limited.
Protea Hotel Landmark provides a shuttle service to and from the airport on request, please remember to make arrangements with us at the time of making your booking.
Mini-van taxi’s or sedan taxi services are readily available throughout the city as well as the Gateway Airport.

2010 FIFA GAMES
