Attractions

Kimberley is best known for The Big Hole; the excavated remains of the largest hand–dug mine in the world. Mined to a depth of 215m, over 2 700kg of diamonds were removed from the earth.

The Kimberley Mine Museum is a replica of the early mining town of Kimberley during the greatest world rush the world has ever known. The restored Kimberley tram runs daily between the museum and city centre.

The Xun Khwe Wildebeestkuil Rock Art Project is based on the outskirts of Kimberley and home to over 400 rock engravings.

History lovers will enjoy visits to the Peace and Justice Memorial, the Cape Police Memorial and the Honoured Dead Memorial. To see a very impressive mineral display visit the McGregor Memorial Museum and the Duggan–Cronin Gallery is an ethnographic museum that depicts the cultures and lifestyles of the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa.

Don't miss the chance to visit one of South Africa's oldest pubs, the Star of the West, built in 1870 out of wood and iron.

Kimberley is a treasure trove for archaeologists and historians; book a tour on the archaeological route (enquire at the Hotel), visit the diamond fields or take the provincial legislature tour. Visit the War Routes and museums to get a real sense of the regions history.

The Africana Library is also based in Kimberley. This is one of the best research libraries in South Africa. For cultural tours, the Galeshewe Township Tour will give you some insight into cultural diversity of the area.
