Protea Hotel Kimberley is situated approximately 1km from the Kimberley city centre and close to the business and theatre districts. Kimberley is the capital of the Northern Cape province of South Africa and was famous as the country's diamond capital in the 19th century. The Hotel is within easy walking distance of the Kimberley Big Hole and Mine Museum and other historical tourist attractions.
Kimberley is best known for The Big Hole; the excavated remains of the largest hand–dug mine in the world. Mined to a depth of 215m, over 2 700kg of diamonds were removed from the earth.
The Xun Khwe Wildebeestkuil Rock Art Project is based on the outskirts of Kimberley and home to over 400 rock engravings.
