The Protea Hotel Hluhluwe & Safaris is joining forces with the Hluhluwe Honorary Officers and the Save the Rhino International Fund to raise money for anti-rhino poaching initiatives in the KwaZulu-Natal area. The first R35 000.00 collected by Protea Hotel Hluhluwe & Safaris will be directed to the Hluhluwe Honorary Officers to assist in the completion of their hangar project for the Bantam Anti-Poaching Aircraft, which will work in co-operation with Zululand Mission Air Transport. The balance of the funds will go to the Save the Rhino International Fund, and be earmarked for the Anti-Poaching Unit of the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve. The poaching of rhino has reached crisis levels with 448 Rhino killed last year and 181 this year already. Fund raising is led by the hotel’s Safari TEAM through the sales of T-shirts, Save our Rhino CDs, bracelets, donations and through the Protea Hotel Hluhluwe & Safaris matching contributions from guests taking the hotel’s Rhino Game Drives. Protea Hospitality Group CEO Arthur Gillis said every Protea Hotel in South Africa supported at least one CSI initiative in their immediate areas. The CSI projects ranged from literacy to feeding, pre-schools to helping the elderly. “We are immensely proud that Protea Hotel Hluhluwe & Safaris is supporting this initiative. Rhino poaching is a scourge that needs to be wiped out and those perpetrating it should face the full might of the law. We encourage other companies to get involved in this worthy cause as well,” Gillis said.
