Situated in a game reserve in the lush, secluded surroundings on the banks of the Vaal River, built around a mineral spring.The large game reserve is home to White Rhino (The hotel re-settled the first Rhino’s in the Free State), giraffe, zebra, and most antelope species. We also have lions in captivity including Timbivati White Lion cubs.

Protea Hotel Christiana is a bird watchers paradise (142 species) and also offers over 20 km of famous fishing and fly fishing sites along the Vaal River.

Interesting Facts
The spring was discovered during the early century, but due to the lack of necessary funds and depression, proper development was never done. Only a minimum of facilities were developed, but did not stop the people from the surrounding areas to came and enjoy the mineral bath. In the sixties, the town council of Christiana realized that their own funds would never stretch far enough to cover a development project.

The provincial Administration founded the holiday resort (now hotel) and, on the 1st August 1966, the first buildings were erected. The holiday resort was named after the then M.E.C Mr. Rob Ferreira. In March 1983 it was transferred to Overvaal resorts, a statutory body. Overvaal was converted to a company on the 1st September 1993, Aventura Ltd. The name then was changed to Vaal Spa, and subsequently, again changed to Aventura Resort Christiana.

On the 1st February 2001, the resort was the first Aventura Resort to privatize and was sold to Nkolo Developments, who immediately started upgrading the resort. The resort stayed under Protea Management and is now called Protea Hotels Christiana.
