And if that alone isn’t enough to brighten your day, shake it up with the accompanying range of specially created cold weather milkshake flavours that’ll make your heart beat much faster!

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! has always been famous for its gourmet burgers, but these special creations that are only available for a month at a time, exceed anything that has ever been served between two halves of a bun.

The June Burger is a simply sublime twist on that sacred South African delight, biltong. The BFF is a 100% pure homemade beef burger delicately infused with biltong, gratinated with blue cheese and topped with roasted fig preserve – served with a side of perfectly crisped fries.

Be sure to book your July date with the “Lamb”borghini before you say goodbye to your BFF, though. This July hands down winner is a minted lamb burger topped with warm brie cheese and glazed berries that’ll give new meaning to rib sticking comfort food.

In August – just in time to celebrate the Super 15 final – comes the Bakkies Wors Burger. The tummy-rumbling SA delicacy is made for oke-sized appetites with the juiciest boerewors mince served with deep fried mustard-coated onion rings.

In September all eyes and stomachs turn to the US of A, where Uncle Sam’s kitchen helpers add some spice to the Stars and Stripes Southern Fried Chicken Burger.

There’s no arguing with the fact that nothing that goes down better with a burger than a shake, so while you’re burger busting try these divine shakes on for size:

  • June: Caffeine Nutter, the triple espresso & peanut butter shake. Everybody loves coffee and nut cookies or peanut butter sandwiches, so this is a true SA winner.
  • July: The Bees Knees, a sumptuous blend of rich dark Lindt chocolate infused with a citrus syrup and chewy bits of honeycomb bring back memories of hot summer days.
  • August: Ouma and Oupa are the flavour of the month, sitting on the stoep waiting for the first signs of spring with cups of warm rooibos and honey, that have been infused in this shake; and
  • September: Carnival Time is the celebration of the return of spring, and what better way to distil it in a glass than with flavours of toffee apples and creamy homemade fudge.

The burgers and shakes are available at the hotels in Cape Town and Melrose Arch. The 200g burgers are R125 and the whopping 650ml shakes are R45 each.
