Pietermaritzburg Pietermaritzburg is situated approximately forty minutes outside of Durban in the Natal Midlands. It's the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal and known to locals as "Maritzburg". The summers are hot and wet, the winters mild and dry. There are no less than ten nature reserves and parks surrounding the area. The Albert Falls Resources Reserve has wildlife, water-sports and camping/chalets. A lion park and zoo are also available for those who wish to have a closer look at the Big Five. Host to many family adventures and outings, Pietermaritzburg has something for everyone. The KZN Railway Museum offers trips to the Midlands on restored steam trains. You can also visit the Scottsville racecourse, one of the country's top courses. The adventurous at heart can choose from taking a "flip" over the city in a small plane, to paragliding, microlighting, gliding and parachuting/skydiving. Jet skiing, tubing, kayaking, wind surfing and white water rafting are also available, as well as mountain biking, 4x4 trails, rock climbing, abseiling and kloofing. With its many malls and craft markets, Pietermaritzburg is a shopping haven for visitors. Places to choose from include the modern Liberty Midlands Mall, and also five craft markets. These markets sell a variety of items, ranging from antiques and knick-knacks, to local craftsmanship. If you have an interest in history, you can visit Project Gateway, a national monument that was once a prison. |
