Mokopane

Mokopane is situated in the Limpopo Province, bordering onto Zimbabwe and Botswana. It’s a popular stopover place for travellers en route to Zimbabwe or Botswana, as it’s on the main routes to these countries.

Founded by the Voortrekkers, Mokopane was previously named Potgietersrus. In 2003, the name was changed to Mokopane, which is in reference to Chief Mokopane, leader of the Tlou tribe in the 1850s. The town is now inhabited by the northern Ndebele tribe.

Mokopane’s surrounding environment is bushveld, or savanna. You can explore ancient caves, decorated with San paintings, such as the Makapansgat Caves, which are 15km north of Mokopane. You can also visit the tropical gardens, see the Big Five and shop for curios.

Mokopane offers a wide selection of activities, including hiking, angling and game viewing. There are also off-road vehicle tracks and camping facilities available. The Arend Dieperink museum contains information regarding Mokopane’s history, from the very dawn of humankind until the modern day.
