Mafikeng/Mmabatho

Mafikeng, meaning 'the place among the rocks', has seen much conflict in its history, being a major site of battle during the Anglo-Boer War as well as the Mafikeng Siege.

The Mafikeng Museum has a comprehensive collection of Anglo-Boer War exhibits, and a defensive fort can be seen at Kanon Kopje, just south of the city. You can visit a memorial, honouring those who died during the Mafikeng Siege near the poignant Mafikeng siege cemetery.

Sol Plaaitje was instrumental to the struggle during the siege, and his novels did much to focus the world's attention on the plight of his people. His former residence and office can be visited, as well as the printing works that published his articles.

View the rare white rhino, as well as a multitude of other game at the Mafikeng game reserve. The reserve spans 4600 hectares and has important breeding programs underway to ensure the continuation of certain species.

There are two large golf courses in Mafikeng, and other various other outdoor activities include the Wondergat, a vast underwater network of caves, popular for diving.

The Mmabatho Conference Centre in Mmabatho, the capital city, has facilities for up to six thousand delegates and is centrally located to accommodate the business traveller's every need.
