THERE are few things in this world that can be cultured, civilised and decadently indulgent all at the same time, but high tea is one of them. Even more so when enjoyed at one of the trendiest spots in Jozi, the Deli on High Street at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch. The buffet-style high tea is served every Sunday afternoon between 2pm and 6pm with a lavish spread of cakes, sweet and savoury treats, pastries muffins, sandwiches, fruits and cheeses to make you swoon with pleasure. Executive chef Vincent San and his team pull out all the stops, baking creations like chocolate mousse, chocolate cream, vanilla butter cream, caramel vanilla, baked cheese and carrot cakes, tempting enough to sway a saint. It’s definitely time to put the diet on hold when you consider the light-as-air buttery scones with jam and whipped cream, and the chocolate pancakes stuffed with orange and mint syrup. The sweetness is balanced with mini smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels, savoury muffins and that all time high tea classic, cucumber sandwiches. With the crusts cut off, of course. Loll on cane loungers outside or settle into a white leather wingback chair inside this uber chic environment as you contemplate your next mouthful…chocolate friandise and dipped strawberries, or something from the cheese board? Or both? High Tea at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch includes your choice from a selection of fine speciality teas like Ceylon, camomile, rooibos, Earl Grey, English breakfast, peppermint or green tea. Lavazza coffee, cappuccinos and speciality coffees are served on request at an additional charge, as are other beverages like sparkling wine. |
