Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, is located in the central part of the country. A very young capital, Abuja was chosen as capital in 1976 and finally became so in 1991. A main feature in Abuja is the 400 metre monolith left by water erosion, called Aso Rock.

Most of the town, including the Nigerian Supreme Court is situated south of the great rock - Aso meaning victorious in the language of Asokoro, which is also believed to possess certain supernatural powers.Other sights include the Nigerian National Mosque and the National Ecumenical Center cathedral.
