Grahamstown Home to the annual Grahamstown National Arts Festival in July, this historical and cultural Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape is a hauntingly beautiful malaria-free region. It's the centre of Frontier Country, the Eastern Cape's historic heartland. Frontier Country includes the towns of Adelaide, Alicedale, Alice, Bedford, Fort Beaufort, Hogsback, Peddie, Riebeeck East, Salem, Seven Fountains and Sidbury, and represents the spirit of the many and varied cultures (Khoi, Xhosa, Boer and British) that met here and made their mark. Today, their rich heritage that can still be seen all over Grahamstown. Numerous forts, broad tree-lined streets, fantastic examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, more than 40 churches and several fine museums are all part of this small cathedral city. Grahamstown also has some of South Africa's finest schools, colleges and educational institutions, such as Rhodes University. You could visit the History Museum, as well as the Observatory Museum which has the only camera obscura in the southern hemisphere. |
