Two South African airlines have recently opened new flight routes to smaller cities in the country, thus offering these secondary nodes the potential for a significant economic boost. The maiden voyage of the SA Airlink flight from Wonderboom Airport, Pretoria, to Cape Town launched this new route in mid-August, and new SA Express routes from the recently reopened Mahikeng Airport to OR Tambo International, Johannesburg, and to Pilansberg, which kicked off in September 2015.

Sol Plaaitje was instrumental to the struggle during the siege, and his novels did much to focus the world's attention on the plight of his people. His former residence and office can be visited, as well as the printing works that published his articles.

View the rare white rhino, as well as a multitude of other game at the Mahikeng game reserve. The reserve spans 4600 hectares and has important breeding programs underway to ensure the continuation of certain species.
There are two large golf courses in Mahikeng, and other various other outdoor activities include the Wondergat, a vast underwater network of caves, popular for diving. The Mmabatho Conference Centre in Mmabatho, the capital city, has facilities for up to six thousand delegates and is centrally located to accommodate the business traveller's every need.
