Christiana

North West Province - Christiana

Christiana lies on the banks of the Vaal River and was named after Christina Meyer, the daughter of then president Andries Pretorius. The town was established in the 1870s in an attempt to alleviate land disputes when diamond fever first hit the area.

A visit to the Digger's Diamond Museum will transport you back in time to the diamond rush. Black and white photographs and old digging equipment pay tribute to the town's diamond history.

For those interested in something a little older, there are excellent examples of San rock art in nearby Stowlands. Prehistoric rock engravings on the Stows Kopje have been declared a national monument.

Nature lovers can view the abundance of game that nearby reserves have to offer or soak in mineral rich hot springs that attract visitors from far and wide. For golf enthusiasts, the Christiana Golf Club has an excellent nine-hole golf course and holds a popular event every year known as the Diamond Run.

Christiana is a gateway town for those wishing to visit the Taung Heritage Site.
