Celebrating 25 years!

Cape Town, 2 July 2009: A toast to Protea Hotels on its 25th birthday celebrations yesterday. A quarter of a century and 5 recessions later, Africa’s largest hotel group is still number one in the consumer’s minds. Proof lies in the fact that the group was recently considered the coolest hotel brand in the Sunday Times Youth Survey.

Protea Hotels was formed on 1 July 1984, with an initial base of four managed properties, which were controlled by Otto Stehlik and his partners

“25 years is a milestone in our existence and we are excited about the next 25 years and longer,” said Arthur Gillis, Group Managing Director, Protea Hotels, “So many exciting opportunities, a lot sparked by the 2010 FIFA World Cup have us all “juiced” and excited about the future of Protea Hotels!”

The hotel group has shown considerable growth over the past 25 years with properties spread across the African continent. This year, Protea Hotels will be celebrating in urban style with the opening of two new 5-star properties in Cape Town under the African Pride Hotel portfolio – the much-anticipated 15 on Orange Hotel in the heart of the Mother City and Crystal Towers Hotel & Spa in the suburban hub of Canal Walk 10 minutes out of the CBD. In addition to the Cape Town properties, Protea Hotel Umhlanga Ridge recently opened its doors and Protea Hotel OR Tambo is expected to open in October.
