Ronnie The Rhino

My name is Ronnie and I live in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. I was orphaned at a very young age and have been brought up by my aunt and uncle. They have taught me all there is to know about the animal kingdom and I have a few cousins to play with.

I spend a lot of time eating grass and leaves; however, when I am not eating or sleeping I am exploring the bushveld with my cousins. Our skin is quite thin; insects like to bite me and I get sun burnt very easily. My uncle taught me a trick to protect my skin and it is one of my favourite things to do. He told me to roll in the mud, which creates a layer for protection; how many kids get permission to roll in the mud?

My aunt is well known in the family as having the biggest horn in the crash. Every day, the cousins get together to see whose horn has grown the most. The horn is our pride and joy, identity and a way of protecting ourselves against predators; all of us want to have the biggest one. There are one or two of my older cousins that have lost their horn, but I am too young to hear their story.

One of our favourite places to hang out is Protea Hotel Kruger Gate because they look out for us. They have had so many builders there for the past year refurbishing the rooms and upgrading the hotel. Now they are focusing their attention on us and we are so excited and grateful to them. Make sure you visit their viewing decks because every now and then my cousins and I can be seen from there. I hope you enjoy a good night's sleep, knowing that you are my hero.
